VALENTINO RETROSPECTIVE Past / Present / Future

One of the most prestigious fashion exhibitions to be on display in Australia is the one and only Valentino Exhibition in Brisbane at the GOMA. Overwhelmed with approximately more than 15,000 visitors in its first opening week the exhibition boasts some of Valentino's most comprehensive, timeless and show stopping pieces. Fortunate enough to have visited the eventful display at the end of August, I was in awe of the large galleries filled with nearly 100 pieces from Valentino's collection dating from the earliest designs in his career, nearly 50 years ago, up until now with the new fashion forward pieces gracing the runways in 2010. Wonderfully curated with interactive, concise and insightful short films from behind the scenes at Valentino's last ever runway. Visitors can wonder freely through the different spaces experiencing and appreciating the last emperors art on display or you can meet for a guided tour through the exhibition where each piece is discussed. During which I was told that each garment is hand made, hand sewn, the fabrics hand over locked [which is mind blowing in itself, you need to see to believe]. Some of his most famous dresses are featured, particularly the dress Julia Roberts wore to the Oscars in 2001, and even a beautiful velvet champagne/butter gown worn by Cate Blanchett. Many more beautiful woman, including famous models, royalty and certainly dignified woman have worn Valentino's dress'. The detail and the femininity of each garments has a certain WOW factor, with certainly thousands of crystals, sequins and beads used on a large majority of his more spectacular pieces you have to really admire the beauty for which he has created these timeless pieces, purely for the beauty of art and aesthetics which was his motivator.

Unfortunately you cannot take photos of the garments on display but I do recommend reserving more that 3-4 hours from your day to fully enjoy everything that this exhibition has to offer. It is most definitely the most concise and beautiful fashion exhibition that has and will come to Australia.
